Chapter Eighteen

Vera

Acouple of guys are watching me and Angel dance. They’re sitting on the leather couch closest to us and it’s hard to ignore them. They’re good-looking guys and I’m enjoying their attention. We have their attention but they aren’t close enough to touch me without permission. Angel’s arm wraps around my waist, our bodies grinding together as we vibe. I pull out my phone and hold it above us because over-sized t-shirts with pockets are life. She closes her eyes tight and smiles wide and I stare at the camera as I record a Snarl. We continue dancing as I press share and slip the phone back into my pocket.

Eventually we make our way through the crowd. Angel and Rem hug and kiss in greeting while I pick up another Jello shot. Rem shakes his head and hands me a cup. He tells me to nurse it and take it slow. I take a gulp of the gin and tonic when the guys from the couch appear by our side. They don’t try to touch me and I’m instantly fine with them being close. Hunter tells them he’s watching them and to behave. They promise to when Hunter’s girl posse start to take pictures.

My phone vibrates against my stomach as Angel records a video for Snarlchat. I don’t know most of these people, but it feels good being a part of a group. Exhaling, I feel my shoulders droop. I’m actually relaxed. There’s no cloud of depression over my head, no rainfall reminding me of the shit I have to deal with daily. When Angel’s done recording snarls, I check my phone and my confusion must show because Rem walks over to me and snatches my phone out of my hand.

“Why the fuck is he calling you?” Rem asked. His voice is oozing with disgust.

“How the hell am I supposed to know?” I said, struggling not to sound defensive.

“Are you guys talking?” he asked.

“Who’s calling her?” One of the guys from the couch asks. He’s cute, just not my type.

“Wouldn’t you like to know,” Rem teased.

“Give it here,” I said.

“Why? Are you going to answer it?” Rem asked.

“Because it’s my phone. I haven’t decided yet,” I sighed.

“Are you guys still talking?” he asked.

“Not like that,” I answered. He grumbled and passed my phone back to me. It wasn’t vibrating anymore, and I was glad.

“He’s not worth it,” he huffed.

“I’m aware,” I sighed.

“Scum. He’s actual scum,” he grunted.

“Trust me. I know,” I said. Not bothering to hide the smile from my lips.

My phone started vibrating and I walked to the corner of the kitchen to avoid having to hear Rem go off again. I loved him. I appreciated his anger, but I don’t want to have this conversation in front of strangers. I was having a good time and leave it to Amos to try to ruin a good time. His name flashes across my screen and I sigh as I answer it.

“Can I help you?” I asked.

“I don’t appreciate your tone,” Amos said aggressively.
